There was a comical moment during Saturday’s Currie Cup clash between the Sharks and Bulls in Durban when the Pretoria team captain Duane Vermeulen He suggested they should play a game of touch rugby.
It was provoked by referee Marius van der Westhuizen who handed out two yellow cards to Sharks center Marius Louw and Bulls mainstay Jacques van Rooyen.
Louw was sent to the trash in the 20th minute for a hit off Morne Steyn after the Bulls pivot took a mark within his own 22-meter area. Louw’s head brushed against Steyn when he made contact, and upon reviewing him, Van der Westhuizen and television match official Marius Jonker decided a yellow card was warranted.
Five minutes later, Van Rooyen suffered the same fate when his entry on the Sharks flank Henco Venter caused the two players to face off.
Both incidents appeared accidental, but officials were firm in applying the law.
Commentator Andy Capostagno called Louw’s decision a “miscarriage,” while the Van Rooyen incident led Vermeulen to screech: “We should start playing touchies.”
