A 32-year-old man drowned at the Alkantstrand in Richards Bay Sunday night while swimming with his brother.
According to the National Maritime Rescue Institute (NSRI), its Richards Bay guard team was “activated” at 6:46 p.m. following reports of a drowning in progress on the north breakwater wall.
“Upon arrival at the site, it was discovered that a local was having difficulty in the water. He had been swimming with his brother when they had difficulties. It seems they were caught by the rip currents. The brother had made it to shore and was not injured,” NSRI said in a statement.
NSRI rescue swimmers carried the man to the beach, where NSRI medics and paramedics performed CPR.

Despite great efforts, the man died on the beach.
The man’s body was turned over to the KwaZulu-Natal Health Forensic Pathology Services.
The police have opened an investigation file.
