• Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel pulled the curtain down on his time at the sport’s most revered team.
• The four-time Formula 1 drivers’ champion failed to increase his titles in the Italian team.
• The German driver will join Aston Martin Racing in 2022, formerly known as Racing Point.
Sebastian Vettel kept his composure and started with a song in his final Ferrari race at Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The four-time German world champion finished 14th, one place behind teammate Charles Leclerc, to end his worst season with the Italian team.
“Nothing should be mentioned about today,” he said, when asked to sum up his feelings after six years as a Ferrari driver.
“It was a pretty bad race for us. We tried everything.”
Before the race, the team gave Vettel an honor guard as he walked to his car from the garage to the pit lane.
In the race, his teammate Leclerc wore a racing helmet that bore a special ‘Danke Seb’ message.
On his last lap, slowing down at the Yas Marina circuit, he surprised many by singing an Italian song about Ferrari on the team’s radio system.
It was broadcast around the world.
And after the race, the team he represented presented him with a huge trophy and for which he won 14 races.
“It was definitely an emotional day with the mechanics saying goodbye on the grid,” he said.
“I felt there was a different dynamic. I am sad for the guys. I will miss them, but I am happy to embark on a new journey.”
Vettel will join Racing Point next season when they are rebranded Aston Martin, replacing Mexican Sergio Pérez along with Lance Stroll, son of team owner Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll.
