Timeline of the Aphiwe Dyantyi doping case

SA Rugby The magazine takes a look at the timeline of the Springbok wing Aphiwe Dyantyi banned substance case, from the news broke to the outcome of the hearing.

On Sunday, Saids CEO Khalid Galant confirmed to SARugbymag.co.za that Dyantyi received a four-year suspension. The athlete was informed on Friday and a formal statement will be released on Monday.

Here are the key dates that lead to this latest news:

August 24, 2019 – Word is released that Dyantyi tested positive for an undisclosed banned substance on July 2 after a Springbok training camp.

August 30, 2019 – The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport confirms that Dyantyi’s B sample has tested positive for banned substances. The player’s B sample was tested at his request after his initial positive test. It is also confirmed that three banned substances were found in his system: methadienone, methytestosterone, and LGD-4033 (commonly known as Ligandrol).

September 2, 2019 – The Dale College Old Boys Union releases a statement in support of Dyantyi following the wing’s positive test for banned substances. Dyantyi is also an elder from Dale.

September 19, 2019 – Dyantyi announces that he will challenge his doping charge after testing positive for three banned substances in August. At the time, he was faced with three options: accept the charge and sanction, file a petition for a reduced sanction, or challenge the charge in an independent court.

November 22, 2019 – In his first social media post since August 2019, Dyantyi provided an update on his mental struggles since he was suspended.

“One of the happiest moments in life is when you find the courage to let go of what you cannot change,” Dyantyi wrote. ‘Five months later and not much has changed except that my battles and struggles empower me and give me strength. My tears, my anguish sometimes holds me back (as if to say “it’s okay to fail”). Life would be easier if I listened to them, but every day they remind me that life wouldn’t be what it is if there weren’t booties and spills every now and then. ‘

January 2020 – Dyantyi’s lawyer files a defense statement on his behalf, while providing “some supplements that, according to him, could have been the source.”

May – April 2020 – Dyantyi’s trial was supposed to have taken place during these two months, but the hearing process was delayed due to Covid-19.

August 2020 –Exactly one year after confirmation that she had tested positive for banned substances, Dyantyi opens up about her anxiety. She revealed how she suffered a panic attack on one of the first times she dared to go out in public after testing positive.

‘A guy helped me a lot to get there and took me to the hospital, but I don’t remember much of what happened. Fortunately, the doctor knew the situation and who I was, and kept everything a secret, which was good. ”

September – November 2020 – Dyantyi’s hearing with Saids finally takes place. It first began on September 15 before meeting again on November 3-4, when it concluded.

December 11, 2020 – On Friday, the player was informed of his four-year suspension imposed by Saids.

December 13, 2020 – News of the outcome of Dyantyi’s hearing and its subsequent suspension breaks. Saids has since confirmed that a formal statement will be released on Monday, December 14.
