‘Mourinho will be on the moon’: Campbell claims Spurs star has proven critics wrong – Spurs Web

Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell has praised Serge Aurier, saying that José Mourinho will be delighted with the Ivorian’s current form.

Certainly Aurier doesn’t immediately surprise you as a Mourinho-type player, as the right-back’s past on defense often proves to be quite erratic and inconsistent.

While the Tottenham manager made the most of the former PSG player’s offensive capabilities last season using him as a key attacking outlet, there were still question marks about his composure and concentration levels at the rear.

When Matt Doherty arrived at the club over the summer, it looked like Aurier would be nothing more than a supporting player this season.

However, the 27-year-old has improved his game in response to increased competition and appears to have overtaken the Republic of Ireland international in Mourinho’s pecking order.

In Tottenham’s last three games against Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, Aurier has shown that he can deliver solid performances and with defensive discipline.

Campbell credited the Spurs right back with proving the critics wrong. The former Arsenal forward told Football Insider: “The Spurs are playing like a José Mourinho team, especially at the back.

“They don’t give away much, everyone knows their job and supports the flanks when they can.

“Aurier is not doing anything too impressive, but he is doing his job and that suits José Mourinho.

“Mourinho will be crazy with him because he is not giving away anything and he is defending well.

“Many people questioned if he could, but it is proven that he is a first-rate player.”

This idea that Aurier was a bad defender was always a myth. Aurier has shown even before this season that he can be excellent as a one-on-one defender, managing to shut out players like Eden Hazard and Wilfried Zaha. The problem with him was always his tendency to lose focus and make stupid decisions. Based on his demonstrations this season, he seems to have removed those misjudgments from his game.
