The incident occurred at a family party in a shed in the picturesque town of Abcoude, on the outskirts of Amsterdam, in late July, the newspaper said.

THE HAGUE – Dutch international soccer player Quincy Promes was arrested in connection with a stabbing at a family reunion earlier this year, a Dutch news report said Sunday.

Promes, a 28-year-old Ajax forward, “is suspected of assault that caused serious physical injury,” says the popular tabloid. The Telegraph said.

The incident occurred at a family party in a shed in the picturesque town of Abcoude, on the outskirts of Amsterdam, in late July, the newspaper said.

“A relative was seriously injured and suffered, among other things, very serious knee injuries,” in the incident, the newspaper said.

Promes allegedly got into a fight after an argument with the relative and other family members immediately intervened, the newspaper said.

The relative filed charges a month ago, he added.

Amsterdam police spokesman Jelmer Geerds told AFP that “a 28-year-old man has been arrested” but declined to give further details.

He said the suspect was in custody and a decision would be made Sunday on whether he would be released on bail.

Ajax could not immediately be reached for comment, but public broadcaster NOS said the club confirmed that Promes was not training on Sunday.

Amsterdam-born Promes, known for his speed and technical style of play, joined Ajax last year from Sevilla FC in a € 15m transfer.

Before that, he played for Spartak Moscow, where he was named Footballer of the Year in Russia in 2017.

He played his first match in the Dutch national colors in March 2014 against France.
