JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on Monday night on developments related to the country’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.
This according to a statement from the Presidency on Sunday night.
The speech follows today’s meetings, Sunday, December 13, 2020, of the coronavirus national command council, the president’s coordinating council, and a special cabinet session.
The Presidency said it would announce the time the president will deliver the speech.
This comes as more than 7,800 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the last 24-hour cycle, bringing the country’s total case burden to more than 852,000.
While 154 more people have died and this has put the national death toll at more than 23,000.
With some restrictions already in place in the Eastern Cape, many speculate that the president will impose more restrictions in other parts of the country to stop the rapid spread of the virus.
In recent days, since the announcement that the country is in its second wave, there has been much talk of returning to higher levels of lockdown.
University of the Western Cape virologist professor Burtram Fielding said that at this point it is extremely important to spread public messages about how to stop the transmission of the virus.
“Nothing we do from a virological point of view will stop this virus, we can only slow down transmission.”
Fielding added that the government was talking about blocking the circuit breakers, said that if it was decided, it would not work: “That will not work because people will keep moving. How are level closures enforced in an informal settlement where people live less than 1.5 meters apart in different houses? The short circuit works abroad in developed countries. “
