Eskom said it is currently struggling to keep up with the increase in equipment failures caused by illegal connections and meter drift.
Eskom will implement load reduction in three provinces to avoid overloading its network that could damage transformers and mini-substations. The power company said several areas in Limpopo, KwaZulu Natal and the Free State would be affected.
Unlike load shedding that affects the entire country, load shedding is a localized outage implemented primarily to prevent grid overload caused by illegal connections and by those who divert electricity meters. These cuts will begin at 17:00.
In KwaZulu Natal, the areas to be affected include densely populated municipalities in Msunduzi, Newcastle, Dannhauser, and Emadlangeni. The reduction of load in the province will last until 7:00 p.m.
In Limpopo, the load reduction will take place between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. The affected areas include the districts of Mopani and Sekhukhune.
In the Free State, where the load reduction is scheduled to last from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Refengkgotso is the only district that will endure a dark Sunday night.
“Currently, Eskom is struggling to keep up with the increase in equipment failures that cost millions to repair,” the power company wrote in the KwaZulu Natal advisory.
