South African soccer took another blunt blow after Mamelodi Sundowns player Motjeka Madisha was killed in a car accident Sunday morning.

Details are still sketchy at this time, but the accident occurred near Kempton Park and it is unclear if the 25-year-old was driving alone at the time of the accident.

Sundowns said in a statement sent to SowetanLIVE’s sister publication TimesLIVE that they would release a more detailed statement later in the day on Sunday after speaking with the family.

“We have learned of certain media reports about Motjeka Madisha and will make an announcement in due course,” the club said.

However SA Soccer Players Union (Safpu) confirmed the news and took to Twitter to extend its condolences.

“We are heartbroken. Masandawana’s defender was killed in a car accident in Johannesburg in the early hours of this morning. Our condolences to his family, friends and football fraternity, ” Safpu’s tweet read.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police spokesman Kobeli Mokheseng referred all inquiries to William Ntladi from Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, who was not immediately available for comment.

Madisha’s death comes just weeks after the fatal car accident of her former Sundowns teammate Anele Ngcongca last month.
