JOHANNESBURG – South Africa registered more than 7,800 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, affirming fears the country is dealing with a resurgence of the virus.

Gauteng accounts for more than a quarter of South Africa’s known infections, yet there are serious concerns in the Eastern Cape, which saw more deaths than any other province.
Almost 5,400 people in that region have succumbed to the virus, 97 of them in the last 24 hours alone.

Health Department officials made several visits to the region, which is plagued by a weakened health system, compounded by an overburdened staff struggling to keep up with the demand for adequate care.
The Health Department also reported that more than 150 more people died from COVID-19 in the last day, bringing the national death toll to 23,106.
