Six people were treated for injuries Saturday after a freight train carrying coal collided with a passenger train in the Northwest.
Paramedics said the freight train’s coal cars had derailed, while the passenger train’s engine caught fire on the tracks outside Leeudoringstad.
“Fortunately, very few people were on board the passenger train and only six people in total were treated for minor injuries,” said Ross Campbell, a spokesman for ER24.
“Two men in their thirties were transferred to a private hospital in Klerksdorp for additional care.
“The other four were treated on the spot by the provincial services, but transport to the hospital declined.”
The cause of the accident is not yet known.
The fire in the passenger train’s engine was quickly extinguished.
