The great Buccaneers supports the alleged interference in the work of the German strategist
Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi described coach Josef Zinnbauer as “failed the team” last season and that he has to hear from manager Stanley ‘Screamer’ Tshabalala and club manager Floyd Mbele on how to win MTN8 .
The pirates face Bloemfontein Celtic in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
After a video that went viral all week after the Pirates’ 2-2 draw in Cape Town last Saturday, speculation resurfaced that Tshabalala is the boss of the club.
In the footage, Tshabalala was seen giving instructions to captain Happy Jele in the stands, before the skipper on the bench came down onto the pitch to allegedly convey the manager’s message to the players during the water break.
Vilakazi alleges that Tshabalala and Mbele have been selecting the team and suggesting tactics for MTN8 matches, while Zinnbauer has been in charge of league matches.
The retired footballer believes that it is necessary to make decisions for the German.
“There is a dynamic in football where there is a manager and your job is to supervise the team,” Vilakazi told iDiski TV.
“You decide with the coach how to do things and if the coach does not listen to you, then you put your foot in the coach and say ‘either my way or your way.’ They gave him a chance last season because the Pirates had a chance to win the league title, but the coach failed the team.
“So now they’re saying ‘Coach, let us show you. Now the MTN8 is starting and you don’t have the pressure, let us show you that when we say we need a trophy, how you plan to win the Cup.
“The way they played in MTN8 until the final, you could see that their team was solid, strong and consistent compared to theirs. [playing in the league]. So you have no choice, you just need to do exactly what you are told to do because it failed. “
Vilakazi’s criticism of Zinnbauer stemmed from the Buccaneers’ elimination from last season’s Nedbank Cup in the Bidvest Wits round of 32 stage, in addition to failing to win the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title.
“Stanley and Floyd gave the coach the final team of 18 and then the starting XI. Because they did that? Watch their matches against Kaizer Chiefs [MTN8 semi-finals]Both the first leg and the second leg, the Pirates played and they just won, ”said Vilakazi.
“They didn’t want to change their lineup because they know it and have been in this game for a long time. But there are times when I blame them, Floyd and Screamer.
But in this scenario I don’t blame them. The pirates need this trophy and [Floyd and Tshabalala] we have decided ‘we will do it ourselves’. We had a chance to win the league title last season, but you [Zinnbauer] ruined it. So we can’t give you that opportunity now, we will do it ourselves.
“That’s why you realize that at MTN8 games, they lined up a different lineup than league games. That’s why you see the Pirates playing on MTN8 and then Orlando in the league ”.
