Six people were injured when a passenger train and a freight train collided in the Northwest on Saturday.

The collision occurred before dawn on a stretch of road that runs parallel to R502 on the outskirts of Leeudoringstad, ER24 spokesman Ross Campbell said.

“ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene at 5.21 am with the South African Police Service and the fire department,” he said.

“Several coal wagons derailed in the collision and the passenger train’s engine caught fire. The fire department quickly extinguished it.

“Fortunately, very few people were on board the passenger train and only six people in total were treated for minor injuries.

“Two men in their 30s were transferred to a private hospital in Klerksdorp for additional care. The other four were treated on the spot by the provincial services, but they declined transportation to the hospital. “

Campbell said the cause of the collision is unknown, but railroad officials were on the scene to investigate.
