JOHANNESBURG – The Democratic Alliance (DA) has warned against closing the country’s beaches as South Africa heads towards its peak of the holiday season.
This comes amid speculation that President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce beach closures Sunday night.
Tourism minister in the shadow of the district attorney, Manny de Frietas, said that while he understood that the government was considering this recommendation from the national coronavirus command council, it would “decimate” the tourism industry.
In a statement released Saturday, he said this would not only bury tourism, but affect the travel and accommodation sectors, which also benefit from the influx of people to the country’s beaches.
De Frietas has suggested that the government leave the beaches open and ensure social distancing.
