Eskom will implement stage 2 load shedding on Saturday and Sunday as the utility deals with unforeseen breakdowns.

The power cuts will be introduced from 06:00 on Saturday (December 12) and will last until 23:00. The same schedule will be implemented on Sunday (December 13), Eskom said in a statement on Friday.

The power company said it needs to implement load shedding to replenish depleted emergency generation reserves by next week.

“As Eskom intensifies its planned maintenance during the off-peak summer period, it has had a host of unforeseen breakdowns due to aging and unreliable plant (s) over the past few days.”

Eskom said it has 7,452 MW of planned maintenance, while another 10,208 MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned maintenance.

“Eskom teams are working around the clock to bring as many of these units back into service as soon as possible.” He said.
