Eskom spokesman Sikonathi Mantshantsha said the cargo shedding this weekend is the result of capacity shortages.
JOHANNESBURG – Eskom implemented Stage 2 load shedding on Saturday, which was expected to last until 11pm that night.
The power company made the announcement Friday night after a two-day warning that its generation system was severely restricted.
The state utility company said it needed to replenish depleted emergency generation reserves by next week.
This is the first time it has implemented the planned December power outages, with concerns that the country will have to deal with power outages this holiday season.

Spokesman Sikonathi Mantshantsha said the cargo removal will be repeated on Sunday.
“This load shedding has been caused by a shortage of capacity; in addition to the 7,500 MW of capacity that is under planned maintenance. We have 10,500 MW that are under planned maintenance. “
In a statement Friday night, the utility company said it had had a “lot of unforeseen breakdowns from old and unreliable plants over the past few days.”
In addition, Eskom explained that it had shut down two generating units at the Kendall Power Plant in accordance with environmental legislation and that four units had been shut down at the Camden Power Plant to preserve the integrity of the ash dam facility.
