This after Health Minister Zweli Mkhize raised the alarm that the pandemic was in its second wave.
“Today, we wish to reiterate our call to South Africans to heed the threat of the growing number of identified Covid-19 cases. There is clear evidence of an exponential increase in transmission and this is of great concern,” he said Thursday. . .
On Wednesday night, Mkhize appeared on a special live television broadcast saying that the country had passed the 6,000 mark in one day.
This was primarily attributed to complacency and an increase in cases among the more mobile age group 15-19 years, as well as large events.

On Thursday, another 173 people died from diseases related to Covid-19, and the Eastern Cape was the most affected with 90 deaths.
In the Western Cape, 52 people died, in the Free State 13, in Gauteng eight and KwaZulu-Natal 10.
A total of 22,747 people have died from illnesses related to the virus.
Since the last report, 45,207 tests have been performed.
The health department said recoveries now amount to 756,671 out of 836,764 cases.
