Two KZN councilors have died in an accident.

Two councilors from the local uPhongolo municipality in KwaZulu-Natal died after an accident on Friday.

According to the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, the department received reports that the two councilors died and three others, one of them also a councilor, were injured and taken to hospital.

Their names were not released as their relatives had not yet been informed at the time of publication.

“The sudden loss of the two councilors leaves a deep vacuum in the local government of the province. The deceased councilors were dedicated servants known for their commitment to the development of rural communities.

“As a department, we are deeply saddened and wish to express our condolences to the affected families. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Hlomuka said.

The department said it would await guidance from the respective families regarding funeral arrangements.
