Special messages were broadcast from friends, including the Dalai Lama and Graca Machel.
Poet Marc Bamuthi Joseph described Tutu as a “generational radical” during the event, which also featured a discussion about the growing authoritarianism in the world.
“Archbishop Tutu is one of the most compassionate, steadfast, and committed leaders of human rights and dignity,” said Darian Swig, founder of Article3.org, in a statement.
“He has always spoken and taken action for those most in need of a voice and a center of attention. Archbishop Tutu’s life of leadership and action is particularly timely at this time.”
The first Human Rights Day was celebrated on December 10, 1948. It marked the approval of the UN General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba delivered an acceptance speech on behalf of Tutu.
