Pretoria – Two taxi operators and three passengers were injured on Friday when unidentified gunmen opened fire indiscriminately at the busy Bosman taxi rank in central Pretoria, the South African Police Service (SAPS) said.
“Police are on the scene at Bosman’s taxi rank in Pretoria following a shooting this morning in which five victims, two taxi drivers and three passengers, were injured and taken to hospital for medical attention,” the spokesman said from Gauteng SAPS, Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.
He said the information was still incomplete before noon on Friday, but that no deaths had been recorded from the shooting.
“The information is still incomplete at this time, but the police can confirm that two unknown suspects arrived at the taxi rank on foot and fired indiscriminately. No deaths have been reported at this stage, ”Peters said.
“The police have started a search for the suspects. We call on anyone who witnessed the incident to call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or contact the Pretoria Central SAPS Police on 012 353 4233 “.
Peters did not say whether the Bosman shooting was related to the taxi turf wars raging in Gauteng.
In August, five people, including three police officers and two suspects, were shot near the Tshwane District Hospital (TDH) in what appeared to be a problem related to taxi violence.
One suspect died while 10 more suspects were arrested at the scene.
The shooting took place on Dr Savage Road, in front of the gates of TDH Pathological Services.
At the time, Peters said a provincial task force investigating taxi violence was in an intelligence-driven operation in which they were tracking down a suspect, leading them to the street where the shooting took place.
“When the police tried to intercept the suspect, as well as three other cars he was with, the suspects started shooting at the police and then responded,” he said.
Peters said four unlicensed firearms and ammunition were found at the scene.
