CAPE TOWN – Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu said that to date, more than 11 million recipients have received social grants worth 15.5 billion rand.

Zulu will give an update on Friday on, among other topics, the implementation of the COVID-19 social distress relief special grant, as well as the food relief implemented during the shutdown.

“Since the declaration of the state of national disaster in March, Sassa has continued the normal business of paying social grants without major interruptions, including the implementation of the six-month surcharge announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in April.

Zulu says she is relieved the grant is extended.

“We are pleased with the government’s decision to extend the grant provision for another three months through January 2021. Of the 9.5 million applications processed in November, more than 6.9 million applications were approved and are already paying.”
