Durban – Instead of celebrating his daughter’s 13th birthday on Thursday, Junaid Sheik’s family gathered for her funeral.

Sheik, 34, a call center agent, was shot in the chest during an alleged dispute with his ex-wife’s partner, Wayne Manuel, at their home in Sastri Park, Phoenix, last Wednesday.

The father of three, who is from Northcroft, also in Phoenix, died at the scene. He was buried in the Muslim Cemetery in Ottawa.

Manuel, 31, was arrested by Phoenix SAPS with the help of KZN VIP Security officers. He was charged with murder and appeared before the Verulam Magistrates Court on Monday. The case was postponed until December 14 for a bond hearing.

Manuel was placed on remand at Westville Prison.

Riaz Sheik Hoosen, the brother of the deceased, said Sheik and his ex-wife, Samantha Wheeler, were separated and going through a divorce. The couple have three children, Jenelle, 13, Shenelle, 10, and Xavier, 6.

“The children lived with my brother. She told us that Samantha wanted to see the children before Jenelle’s birthday on Thursday and that she would take them to visit her. She left the children at the house with Samantha and Wayne and went to see a neighbor. near your house about selling a refrigerator. “

Hoosen claimed that moments later the children ran to the neighbor’s house to tell Sheik that their mother and Wayne were fighting. “He came back to the house and there was an argument between him and Wayne. That’s when Junaid was shot. Shenelle told us that she had seen her father killed.

“Words cannot describe how we feel at this time. The defendant took a person who was a father, son and brother. Junaid was the youngest in our family. He was our baby, the youngest of six siblings.”

He said that his mother, Amina Bibi, now took care of the children.

“What hurts us the most is seeing children in pain and seeing them cry.”

He said that Jenelle’s birthday could be full of pain from now on.

“This was a historic birthday for Jenelle. My brother planned to have a party at her house. But instead, we said goodbye to him. He loved his children and never made them the responsibility of anyone else. He was a father and mother at the same time.”

He said the children were traumatized.

“The life they knew with their father is no more. Shenelle can’t sleep. We are trying to be strong but we want the person responsible to stay behind bars.”

Captain Nqobile Gwala, a spokesman for the provincial police, said Phoenix SAPS is investigating a murder case.
