The utility said in a statement Thursday that the charge had not yet been removed, but that the situation could change.

JOHANNESBURG – Eskom warned Thursday of a high probability of loss of load due to the system being restricted.

The utility company said in a statement that the load has not yet been reduced, but that the situation could change.

“To overcome the peak of the night, we urge the public to reduce electricity use as the power system is severely restricted,” Eskom said.

“This shortage of capacity has been caused by the loss of multiple generation units and high load losses, in addition to the generation units that are already placed in planned maintenance.”

Eskom said that the high probability of load outage is due to several generating units going offline.

“We currently have 7,532MW in planned maintenance, while another 10,853MW of capacity is out of unplanned maintenance. Eskom teams are working around the clock to return as many of these units as possible to service as soon as possible, ”the statement read.

The country has not experienced a cargo outage for several months and instead, Eskom instituted cargo reduction in some areas.
