Cape Town – Grassy Park police have praised residents for reporting gangsters who threw guns, resulting in the arrest of two suspected hitmen in just two days.

The station’s commander, Col. Dawood Laing, says Parkwood and Ottery residents are sick and tired of gangsters and have stepped up to help police prevent shootings in their communities.

In the first arrest Monday night, police detained an alleged hitman for the Yuru Cats gang in Ottery after receiving a tip.

“Officers from the Crime Prevention Unit were conducting patrols when they received a tip about a skollie in Peter Court that he was in possession of a gun and drugs, ”Laing says.

“The officers responded immediately and saw the suspect who ran when he saw the officers.”

Laing says determined policemen chased the 35-year-old man, and when they searched him, they found a 9mm pistol hidden in his underwear.

“They found no drugs, but the 9mm pistol with 17 rounds of live ammunition was hidden in his boxer shorts.

“He was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. The firearm was also found to have been reported stolen on Mitchells Plain in November. “

The next day, residents approached police officers on patrol in Parkwood and told them about a gangster who was seen walking around with a gun.

“They told the officers that the suspect, who is a member of the Mongrels gang, was on his way to shoot members of rival gangs and the officers went looking for him,” Laing says.

“They saw him at Cuckoo Crescent, where he ran when he saw the officers and dropped the gun, but they recovered the 9mm pistol and arrested him.”

Both gunmen will appear soon in Wynberg Magistrates Court.

Laing says that while cops are working hard to stop gang shootings, they have noticed that many gangs now have new hitmen.

“In recent months, many of the gang’s top shooters have been arrested and taken off the streets, but we are seeing a new group of hitmen emerging as young men are now trying to make a living. tjappies (tattoos) in gangs.

“But the community is not having it and is giving information so that we can arrest these guys.

“The holiday season is just around the corner and none of us want to see an innocent person killed because gangsters are shooting.”
