JOHANNESBURG – A police brigadier and her husband are due to appear in Pretoria Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of corruption and counter the ends of justice in connection with the escape of self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary.

Early Thursday morning, the pair turned themselves in to the Hawks team tasked with investigating Bushiri’s alleged crimes in South Africa.

It is not yet clear how this brigadier and her husband are linked to the case.

Hawks spokesman Katlego Mogale said: “The arrest warrants were authorized on Wednesday in connection with an amount of R500,000 that was allegedly paid to the brigadier. The investigation began as an inquest and became a case file in February 2020. “

Bushiri and his wife Mary are in Malawi after they fled South Africa last month.

The fugitives had been granted bail prior to their next court appearance on charges of fraud, theft and money laundering.

It is still unclear how the couple managed to evade authorities and sneak into Malawi.
