Former Crime Intelligence CFO Sentenced to 10 Years for Corruption

Former CFO for Criminal Intelligence, Major General Solomon Lazarus, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Pretoria Regional Court on corruption charges.

He has launched an appeal.

Lazaro, head of the Secret Service Account (SSA), was convicted of corruption for more than 200,000 rand, the NPA Investigation Directorate said on Wednesday.

“Lazarus was involved in the acquisition of motor vehicles for Crime Intelligence from Atlantis Motors, a service provider for Crime Intelligence’s front company, Universal Technical Enterprises CC (UTE),” said Sindisiwe Twala, a spokesperson for the Investigations Directorate.

Later, Lazaro “benefited from the money that belonged to the state to buy the vehicles,” Twala said.

According to him, the sentence was based on bonuses that included purchase of his daughter’s 55,000 rand Kia Picanto, tbought a Honda CBR for his son for R27,432, the payment of a deficit of R116,313 for the purchase of a Nissan Murano 3.5I v6 4X4 CVT vehicle for him, and the purchase of a Honda ATV in April 2009 worth R39,193 for him.

The benefits were R237,939, ”Twala said.
