Johannesburg: Long delays expected into the night on the N1 after a fatal multi-vehicle accident and fire on the N1 North at the Allandale Road exit in Midrand on Wednesday afternoon.

A truck carrying cars and two smaller vehicles exploded into flames when they collided on the busy highway just before 3 p.m., ER24 said. Since then, the fire has been extinguished.

Two motorists died from severe burns. The 40-year-old trucker survived the ordeal and escaped with only minor injuries.

The emergency services of the city of Johannesburg have not reported any other injuries.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesman Wayne Minnaar said: “The truck was carrying cars when the driver lost control and crossed the central median.”

At least three lanes, on the M1 North and South, were affected, Minnaar said.

Road users were advised to avoid the N1 between Allandale and New Road and to use alternative routes such as Old Pretoria Road or the R55.

ER24 confirmed that the police remain at the scene to continue their investigations.

“Two people were killed in a fire as a result of a collision between a truck and two light motor vehicles on the N1 near the Allandale exit ramp in Midrand this afternoon.

” ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene along with several other emergency services at 2:56 p.m. to find the three burning vehicles in the middle of the highway. “

“The Joburg City Fire Department set out to extinguish the fire, which destroyed all three vehicles.

” Drivers of both light motor vehicles suffered severe burns in the incident and were pronounced dead at the scene by ER24 and another private service. The driver of the truck, a man in his forties, managed to escape with minor injuries ”.

“He was treated and transferred to a hospital in the area by another service in the place.

” Both the northbound and southbound lanes were closed to traffic at one point. Both SAPS and JMPD are present for the investigations ”.
