CAPE TOWN – Buffalo City Township (BCM) in the Eastern Cape is mourning the passing of its Deputy Mayor, Councilwoman Zoliswa Matana.

Matana was admitted to hospital earlier this week due to complications related to COVID-19 and died on Wednesday.

“We are in serious devastation as the Executive Deputy Mayor was very active in implementing development in the city, more particularly in integrated planning, as she was responsible for the internally displaced and the performance reporting function. His cunning and vigilance will be deeply missed, ”Buffalo City Mayor Xola Pakati said in a statement.

Pakati said the municipality had lost a strong and committed community activist whose life story was the testimony of selfless service to others.

“The ongoing devastation caused by COVID-19 is too great to understand and explain,” Pakati said.

And he added: “This loss of the executive vice mayor comes to us at a time when we are beginning to witness an alarming increase in COVID-19 infections, a sign of the arrival of the second wave of the coronavirus. This happens just when we think the storm with accompanying pain and pain has passed. “

Like the Western Cape, parts of the Eastern Cape have also seen an increase in coronavirus infections in recent weeks.

Pakati had renewed a call on residents to adhere to security protocols, especially during the festive period.
