The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government says it is aware of reports and proposals regarding possible beach closures during the holiday season, but stressed that no formal decision has been made.
“The provincial government would like to state that no formal decision has been made on this matter,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said the Provincial Command Council, chaired by Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala, is tasked with preventing a second wave of Covid-19 infections from hitting the province. To this end, the province has activated its revival implementation plan and strategy.
“The primary focus for now is on efforts to mitigate and prevent the resurgence of Covid-19 without further disruption to economic activity and people’s livelihoods.”
The provincial government said it continues to interact with stakeholders, including amakhosi and municipalities. He added that he continues to receive updates on the status of infections. “All actions will be based on scientific and medical advice.”
As of Tuesday (December 8), KZN has a total of 9,788 active coronavirus cases, trailing only the Western Cape at the provincial level (16,089). The province has reported a total of 3,406 deaths and 119,413 recoveries.
The number of new coronavirus cases in South Africa increased by 4,011, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases to 821,889 since the outbreak.
Meanwhile, 183 people died Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 22,432 since the outbreak.
“The main objective at this stage is to do everything possible to slow the spread of Covid-19 infections and, at the same time, work hard to reactivate the economy after the devastation caused by the pandemic. Therefore, the province is looking for what can be done better to save lives and at the same time protect livelihoods, ”said Prime Minister Sihle Zikalala.
Public domain issues are currently part of the debates and proposals of various actors and will be discussed once they are formally presented.
“At this stage, there is no decision that the Provincial Government has made or is contemplating taking regarding the closure of beaches. This can only change based on an assessment of the situation on the ground and on the advice of medical experts. “
“Let’s wear a mask at all times, avoid meeting and maintain social distance. It is important to disinfect regularly. All of us must also comply with level 1 disaster regulations, ”said the prime minister.
Zikalala is expected to present the KZN holiday season safety plans and Covid-19 prevention plans on Friday (November 11).
“Issues related to the safety of our visitors and the measures that will be taken to ensure that there is no increase in infections will be outlined during the launch of the holiday season.”
