Pretoria – A Mozambican national serving time for rape, robbery and kidnapping, and a Zimbabwean serving time for burglary, at Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria escaped, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) said Wednesday.
“The DCS has launched a manhunt following the escape of two convicted prisoners,” said spokesman Singabakho Nxumalo.
“The fugitives are Thabo Zacharia Muyambo, from Mozambique, who is serving a life sentence on 21 counts of various crimes, including rape, robbery and kidnapping; and Johannes Chauke, from Zimbabwe, serving 20 years for burglary offenses ”.
On Wednesday morning, Nxumalo said that the DCS Emergency Support Team was working closely with SAPS to stop them.
He said officers were “hot on their heels and these fugitives will be taken back behind bars.”
“The Department of Correctional Services has also launched an internal investigation into this incident. Members of the public are urged to contact the nearest police station if they come into contact with them, ”Nxumalo said.
In September, a manhunt began after three prisoners convicted of robbery and firearms charges escaped from Leeuwkop Prison in Sandton, Johannesburg.
At the time, Nxumalo said the department was awaiting a preliminary report that would detail how the prisoners escaped from the facility.
Gauteng police and the CSD were leading the pursuit of Asiphe Mfusi Zinyateli, Reuben Khemi and Tshepo Mogawane.
