JOHANNESBURG – An international education report on Tuesday revealed the shocking state of math and science in South African schools.
The 2019 International Mathematics and Science Trends Study (TIMSS) was administered to several countries around the world, including South Africa, in grades 5 and 9.
It found that 63% of fifth graders did not acquire basic math skills and 72% didn’t acquire basic science skills.

According to the report, 41% of ninth graders had demonstrated basic math skills and only 36% had acquired basic science skills.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga said her department would continue to question the results to improve the country’s education system.
“So I am very hopeful that we will bring back assessments and also guide the industry in terms of the assessment tools that are needed,” Motshekga said.
