Wentworth and Merebank residents want the Engen refinery to compensate the families who “lost everything” in last week’s explosion at the plant south of Durban.

On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters gathered on Tara Road to demand adequate compensation for all residents and workers affected by the blast.

South Durban Community Environmental Alliance Air Quality and Officer Bongani Mthembu told SowetanLIVE’s sister publication TimesLIVE that “enough was enough” as Engen’s story of gas leaks and explosions, which affected communities from Merebank, Wentworth and Bluff, it was well documented.

“We want senior managers at the Engen refinery to take responsibility for the damage caused by the December 4 explosion and many other incidents that have occurred at the plant before,” he said.

“All residents and workers in the southern Durban basin who have been affected by the most recent explosion should receive adequate compensation for both material and psychological damage.”
