A lawyer who stole R4 million was ordered to return the money.

A lawyer was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison, suspended for five years, by the Pretoria Commercial Crimes Court for theft of trust funds.

Isak Snyman, 46, was hired in 2010 in Britain to buy and register properties on behalf of clients. Thereafter, approximately R4 million was deposited into his trust account. Instead of buying the properties, Snyman embezzled the funds, Hawks spokesman Tlangelani Rikhotso said.

The matter was reported to the Hawks’ Serious Business Crimes Investigation and investigations were conducted, resulting in Snyman being subpoenaed to court.

Snyman pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years, fully suspended for a period of five years on the condition that he repay the funds in monthly installments of R50,000 until the balance is paid in full.
