A man has been arrested on murder and rape charges after being on the run for more than a year.
A 27-year-old man appeared in White River Magistrates Court Monday after being wanted by police for more than a year in connection with the murder of his 28-year-old girlfriend and the rape of their daughter.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesman Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the man was arrested in White River on Sunday.
“The suspect allegedly killed his girlfriend, raped his daughter and burned down the house where his girlfriend was staying with her daughter,” Mdhluli said.

The incident occurred in Msholozi near White River.
“Reports indicate that neighbors were awakened by the hysterical girl, who could barely walk, who alleged that she was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. Neighbors also noticed that the house where the girl lived with her mother was on fire. The burned body of the girl’s mother was later discovered in the burned house, “Mdhluli said.
On Sunday, police received information that the man had been seen in a tavern.
Later, the police arrested him and charged him with murder and rape. The man was found to be in the country illegally, and an additional charge was added for violation of immigration law.
