More than 500 motorists have been arrested for various traffic violations across South Africa since the holiday season road safety campaign launched last week, traffic law officers say.
According to Simon Zwane, a spokesman for the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), 219 of the arrests were related to drunk driving. The next most significant offense was outstanding arrest warrants, with 189 arrests made.
Other crimes include speeding and operating public transportation vehicles without permits.
“So far, a total of 128 roadblocks have been made, during which 71,328 vehicles have been stopped, 56,805 traffic tickets have been issued, 312 vehicles have been discontinued, 525 vehicles have been seized and 541 arrests have been made.
“Road safety education and awareness campaigns and law enforcement operations will intensify this week as the country prepares for the peak period of end-of-year travel,” Zwane said.
The RTMC advises all drivers to check for outstanding traffic tickets before embarking on their holiday trips. Traffic officers are being deployed on all major routes, and those with outstanding traffic tickets will not be allowed to advance.
“Traffic officers will also be deployed to various locations across the country to deal with inconsiderate, reckless, and negligent driving, speeding, drunk driving, roadworthiness and overload.
“The RTMC wishes all those who travel long distances to vacation destinations a safe journey ahead. Motorists are urged to travel during the day to avoid collisions. Evidence shows that many fatal crashes occur at night when reckless driving increases. ”Zwane added.
