JOHANNESBURG – The South African Cabin Crew Association (Sacca) lashed out at the Department of Public Companies for asking unions representing South African Airways (SAA) workers to help finalize the corporate rescue process.

The association said the department could not use the unions as scapegoats and that they would not allow the government to intimidate employees.

The department claims that certain unions are deliberately undermining the process and appear to be in league with opposition parties in this regard.

SACCA president Zazi Nsibanyoni-Mugambi said that the unions tried to make suggestions about what the business rescue plan should look like from the start, however the department was not interested in the opinion of the same people who know the ins and outs of SAA.

Nsibanyoni-Mugambi said it was ironic that the department is now blaming the unions for delaying the process.

“Unions are used as scapegoats for them to achieve some kind of plan. Obviously we want to engage with DPE to try to find a solution, but you can’t steal from employees over and over again. ”

Without the rescue plan being finalized, the unions claim that their members have been without pay for eight months.

The department said that while it sympathized with the plight of SAA workers who have not received wages, it believes that the agreement reached with some unions for three months’ payment of outstanding wages is fair and equitable.
