“The South African tour is part of the World Trials Championship and Futures Tour Program,” said a Cricket Australia spokesperson.
“We will continue to plan the tour and monitor the biosecurity situation.”
England’s decision followed a day of tense meetings between players and management, and preceded a joint statement by Cricket South Africa and the England and Wales Cricket Council (ECB) stating that the move was mutual and was taken “to guarantee the mental and physical health and well-being of players from both teams. “
Australia’s matches against South Africa are often heated affairs and the next series is one of the most anticipated of 2021, taking place after the last tour, which culminated in the ball manipulation scandal that rocked Australian cricket. .
While the tour is still three months away, the canceled South Africa-England series shows that international cricket is still at the mercy of the coronavirus pandemic.
The tour from India to Australia so far has been uneventful, but Pakistan had had six positive tests in its playgroup while in quarantine in New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Australian hitter Matthew Wade said he hadn’t given much thought to the South African tour.
“And I’m not sure any of the other players thought about it,” Wade said.
“I saw that the game was postponed, that’s all I’ve come to here.
“I am confident that the Cricket Australia and South Africa board will work together and come up with the right solution.
“But as players, we will go into this series and when it comes, we will see where it lands. But it is a long road for us.”
