Johannesburg – Five people reportedly assaulted to death a stranger on a farm after accusing him of being there to steal.

Phillip le Roux, 33, Mike Bass, 41, Samuel Modukanele, 53, Martin le Roux, 60 and Paul Michau, 70, are charged with assaulting Petrus Thamaga on Saturday at the Vergenoeg farm.

They were later arrested and appeared in Delareyville Magistrates Court on Monday, where they were granted bail of 5,000 rand each.

Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone of the North West Police said that reports on the incident state that after being accused of being at the farm to steal, Thamana was assaulted.

Thereafter, some of the farm workers, who knew the victim, called his relative in the village of Ganalaagte and informed him about the incident.

“The relative then drove to the farm to look for the victim. In the town, the relative left the victim on the street so that he could go and report the matter to the member of the local Community Police Forum.

Unfortunately, the victim collapsed and died. The incident was reported to the police who made the arrest.

“The Northwest Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Seal Kwena, condemned the incident and warned that the police will not hesitate to act against anyone who takes justice into their own hands.

“He commended the police for bringing the alleged perpetrators to the book to confront the full power of the law,” Mokgwabone said.
