The Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) arrested a 27-year-old Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officer who was on the run after he allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend and threatened to kill her.
It is alleged that the officer and his 24-year-old girlfriend had an argument around 4:50 p.m. Sunday before he assaulted and kidnapped her.
“During the process, it is alleged that some relatives tried to intervene, but failed,” said IPID spokesman Sontaga Seisa.
He said the man went to his home to get his service pistol, which was when relatives tried to stop him.
“In addition to his duty pistol, the officer also armed himself with three knives,” Seisa said.
Apparently, he took his girlfriend to an open area near a grave and told her that he would kill her.
Seisa said the girlfriend saw a flagged police van and raised the alarm. The EMPD officer was arrested.
Arrest warrant issued
Police recovered the firearm and the three knives from the officer’s car.
According to IPID, the woman was seriously injured and needed medical attention.
“This morning, our investigators went to look for a case file and unfortunately the local police officer has already forwarded the file to the court in Eden Park,” Seisa said Tuesday.
When they followed up, they found that the case was not registered and that the man had been released.
IPID took over the matter and managed to reach the senior prosecutor, who issued an arrest warrant for the man.
“The [man] it is stationed at the Katlehong EMPD offices, “Seisa added.
He is expected to appear in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Tuesday and the state intends to challenge his request for bail.
