DETROIT – Ford’s long-awaited new compact bakkie is taking shape and looks set to be unveiled in 2021.
In 2019, Jim Farley, who was then a product executive but is now the CEO of the company, announced that the company was working on a smaller truck that would sit under the Ranger, and since then we have seen several highly disguised prototypes. . that didn’t reveal any of the styling details.
But now we have a very good idea of how it will look thanks to some new spy photos that were sent to the Engine1 website by a reader. Although they only show the body in white, we can still see a strong resemblance to the Ranger’s overall shape.

However, underneath the butch exterior, which is rumored to resemble the Bronco Sport from the front, is the same unibody platform as the latest SUV. This means it won’t offer the same kind of strength and load-bearing capacity to go anywhere as the ladder frame Ranger, but given the increasing leisure orientation of bakkies, that might not even matter. In front of the engine, Engine report It was recently speculated that the Maverick bakkie would offer the same pair of turbo petrol engines as the Bronco Sport, these being a 1.5-liter three-cylinder unit with 134kW and a 2-liter four-cylinder that is good for 186kW. While the entry versions will likely be front-wheel drive to save costs, the larger-engine models will certainly offer permanent all-wheel drive.
The aforementioned US publication also said that prices in the US could be around $ 20,000 (around R300,000), which would make it $ 4,000 (R60,000) cheaper than the most basic Ranger.
However, the Maverick has yet to be confirmed for introduction in South Africa and with import duties at stake (assuming it won’t be built here) you may not enjoy such a huge price advantage over the Ranger.
