CAPE TOWN – Matric Rage organizers maintain they were COVID-19 compliant at Ballito Rage and say they acted quickly when alerted to potential positives.

Ballito Rage went ahead recently despite the increasing number of COVID-19 infections.

After the event, staff members and attendees tested positive for the virus.

Many of the students attended one or more of the Ballito Rage events that took place in Umhlanga, Ballito and Durban.

JBay Rage has since been canceled, while Joburg Rage has been postponed.

Every year, matrices flock to Rage parties to blow off steam and celebrate the end of school.

This year, ticket sales dropped considerably due to fears of contracting the virus.

Rage Festival spokesperson Darren Sandras said the Ballito event typically sells up to 5,000 tickets, but only 1,900 were sold this year.

He said that they adhered to the rules and that no more than 500 students attended the predominantly outdoor meeting on any particular day.

“When we learned of possible COVID-19 cases, we acted immediately and sent a communication to all attendees to inform them that they must follow the NICD protocols.”

At the moment, the Plett Rage event is still available for late January through early February, but organizers acknowledge that those dates may change again.
