JOHANNESBURG – The city of Johannesburg (CoJ) has evicted a mother and her four children from a transformer substation they had made their home.

It is not yet clear how long the family was in the dangerous high-voltage chamber in Randburg.

On Monday, officials found a refrigerator, stove, beds and clothing at the scene.

Gauteng Department of Infrastructure and Environment spokesman Stanley Itshegetseng said the Department of Social Development was now helping the family with an alternative shelter.

“I am of the opinion that he moved there out of desperation and understood that it is quite dangerous to move the children there, but he moved them there anyway. The problem is that the employer must take responsibility for allowing their own employees to allow children to use this dangerous thing in their space. “
