A father of one of the school’s students hosted the performance for his daughter and some of her friends, after the school’s registration party was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The department said it had established that parents asked class representatives to circulate invitations on their class WhatsApp groups.

In the initial invitation, it was clear that there were only 100 spots available.

Once people expressed their interest, a separate WhatsApp group was started for students who RSVPed and wanted to attend the event.

The authorities said that the fact that people from other schools also attended showed that it was not a “school event.”

Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer said: “WCED remains committed to inclusion and celebrating diversity. However, we are also concerned that people are using events to mobilize racial tensions without knowing the facts. ”

The president of the school’s governing body, Guillaume Smit, has welcomed the department’s finding.

“We are grateful for the findings of the WCED, it exonerates the school regarding that matrix function since we, from the beginning, said that it was a private function and we had no prior knowledge of it and we were not involved as a school. ”

It was also found that there are no grounds for taking action against the teachers who attended the private event.
