JOHANNESBURG – The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) is raiding the offices of the National Lottery Commission in Pretoria on Tuesday morning.

Last month, President Cyril Ramaphosa authorized the SIU to investigate allegations of corruption and mismanagement at the commission.

The SIU is working with the Hawks and the National Tax Authority, following up on allegations that the money was misused since 2014.

It is alleged that various grants were not distributed to community projects, but instead reached the hands of staff.

SIU spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said they now had a mammoth task to go through stacks of folders, which include several years of transactions.

“We were afraid that the documents could disappear now that this is public, so we requested a search and arrest warrant that was granted by the magistrate yesterday and that is why we are here today.”
