JOHANNESBURG – Member of the provincial legislature (MPL) of the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng, Dumisani Dakile, resigned from the legislature to make way for Parks Tau.

Tau is ending his duties as deputy minister for cooperative governance and traditional affairs and is preparing to become Gauteng’s MEC for economic development.

Dakile is a former Cosatu secretary in Gauteng and was chairman of the portfolio committee for road infrastructure and public transport in the legislature.

The ANC in the province had an issue last week with the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Gauteng which refused to allow one of its members in the legislature to step down to give Tau a seat.

ANC Provincial Secretary Jacob Khawe said four MPLs had initially been approached to resign and Dakile agreed to make way for Tau.

“We understand them very well. However, in this matter they did go ahead because we were still involving several comrades. So they didn’t even know that we weren’t just talking to ANCYL and we were talking to all members of the legislature, “he said.

Tau’s new position was announced by Prime Minister David Makhura last week when he made changes to his cabinet and appointed a new health minister to replace Dr. Bandile Masuku.

He fired Masuku in October over the Gauteng Health Department’s Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) saga.
