Johannesburg – A 23-year-old man has just been released from the hospital after two men who allegedly saw him stab his 30-year-old girlfriend assaulted him.
The incident occurred on Friday in the village of Lokaleng. The man has been under police surveillance and is expected to appear before the Taung Magistrates Court on a murder charge soon.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani of the Northwest Police, the man and the victim were seen arguing before the latter was killed.
“The suspect reportedly stabbed the woman with a knife to the neck. The victim died while on his way to the hospital. The suspect was also taken to hospital after being assaulted by two men who saw him stab the victim.
“The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage and investigations into the matter continue.”
The Northwest Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Seal Kwena, condemned the incident, which occurred within 16 Days of Activism for Non-Violence Against Women and Children.
He praised the police for their swift response which resulted in the arrest of the alleged perpetrator and urged community members to refrain from taking justice into his own hands.
The founder and president of the Taung Men’s Forum Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, Tebogo Mokgejane, has expressed shock and dismay at the brutal murder.
Mokgejane said what happened was heartbreaking, considering it happened while the country was observing the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
“We have allowed gender-based violence to become the norm in our rural communities and that must change now. Women, girls and boys cannot continue to live in constant fear of being attacked and raped. Women should live free and should not have to protect themselves from men, ”she said.
Mokgejane has asked the Taung community to attend the memorial service for the deceased on Thursday and to also support his family.
“Men must take the stand and show their support in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide. This pandemic must end now and it can only cease to exist if we all work together as a community and all formations, ”said Mokgejane.
