JOHANNESBURG – Education stakeholders and the teachers union are heading to court to challenge Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s decision to get tuition students to rewrite leaked exams.

The minister announced last week that due to the leak of Mathematics Document 2 and Physical Sciences Document 2, students across the country will have to rewrite them.

The decision did not sit well with teachers unions who said they would file an urgent injunction to reverse the decision on Monday.

Nomusa Cembi of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) has called the move premature.

“We will request an urgent injunction on the department’s decision to have all students rewrite these two documents. We believe that this decision is unfair and premature. “

South Africa’s National Organization of Professional Teachers (Naptosa) has urged the department and law enforcement agencies to finalize the investigation into the leaks to prevent thousands of enrollees from having to rewrite the documents.

Basil Manuel de Naptosa said: “Right now, they are telling us that there are about 200,000 students who accessed the newspaper. However, now we must not say that more than 400,000 students accessed the newspaper. We are saying, investigate properly, but do not punish the NSC. “

However, the Department of Basic Education said it was willing to challenge the unions in court.

Spokesman Elijah Mahlangu said: “Those who have announced that they will take the department to court, we will wait for them and see what happens.”

The math test 2 will be written on December 15 and the physical science test 2 days later.
