Discovery Health medical plan has launched a new prepaid system that will allow anyone living in South Africa to purchase vouchers for health services through WhatsApp.
The medical plan said its first offer is a R300 GP medical consultation voucher, which includes the drugs dispensed by the doctor after the consultation.
The coupon can be redeemed at any GP within the Discovery Prepaid Health network, he said.
“Our vision is that buying high-quality private health care prepaid vouchers will become ubiquitous, similar to buying prepaid airtime for our mobile phones,” said Discovery Health CEO Dr. Ryan Noach.
He added that there is no limit to the number of vouchers customers can buy.
“We have carefully selected healthcare professionals who are pioneers in offering Discovery Prepaid Health with us, and we are excited that everyone in our country has the opportunity to consult with them.”
Noach said the Discovery Prepaid Health network will initially include physicians in the country’s major metropolitan areas within eight of the nine provinces. This will be further expanded, with new practices being added daily, he said.
“While Discovery Prepaid Health is designed to appeal to uninsured private healthcare consumers, this offering is also very relevant to our existing Discovery Health Medical Scheme members as they can, in 60 seconds, purchase a coupon and share the link the coupon with anyone else.
“A parent can shop for a student away from home; a sibling can buy for a loved one at a distance, an employer for an employee, etc. “Said Noach.
How to access
Discovery Prepaid Health can be accessed by registering a user’s profile through www.discovery.co.za or on WhatsApp at 0800 33 78 46.
Discovery customers can also link to these platforms through the Discovery corporate app.
Customers can buy coupons with cash at the store, at one of the 350,000 points of sale. Coupons are also available through the Discovery Prepaid Health web app, or the Vitality Active Rewards mall, with a debit or credit card.
Users can then load the coupon onto their prepaid health balance via WhatsApp, online, or via the Discovery Prepaid Health app.
“Disruption in the healthcare market is required to improve access to and affordability of private healthcare for all South Africans so that they can choose quality private primary healthcare whenever they want,” said Noach.
