CAPE TOWN – The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Saturday defended its decision to grant a year off for MP Phumzile van Damme.

Party chief Natasha Mazzone said the district attorney decided to give Van Damme a sabbatical now because the December period was quiet.

“The December / January / February period of Parliament is quite uneventful and therefore we felt that this was a very good time for her to take a year off so that she can rest and recuperate and fully concentrate on nothing but her health. ”.

It’s unclear whether it will automatically return after a new shadow cabinet was announced.

Zak Mbele, who was deputy to van Damme, is the new communications minister in the shadow of the district attorney.

Initially, van Damme said he would challenge the decision, but appears to have changed his mind.

Since then, he has said that he “will follow instructions.”

But Mazzone added that even if van Damme objected, she and party leader John Steenhuisen had already decided that she should step aside temporarily.
