Eleven suspects, including two police officers, have been arrested after a botched robbery at a diamond shop.
Eleven people, including two police officers, have been arrested after a botched jewelry theft in Johannesburg.
Gauteng police responded to information about the Bryanston robbery, setting up a multidisciplinary team operation to observe the diamond leakage from noon on Saturday, police spokeswoman Colonel Brenda Muridili said Sunday.
“At approximately 8:30 pm, the team identified three vehicles heading towards the target location, one of them was a marked police bakkie,” he says.
Police officers approached the suspects as they exited the vehicles, but began firing at the officers.
“The members responded to the fire and subsequently arrested 11 suspects, two of them with gunshot wounds to the legs. None of the team members was injured; three of the police vehicles are riddled with bullets,” Muridilli said.
The police seized a rifle and two pistols, as well as the three vehicles.
“The suspects will appear in Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday … facing the following charges: conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted murder, possession of firearms and ammunition without a license, possession of suspected stolen vehicles, and driving without the consent of the owner, “he said. .
